Is Critical Thinking suitable for Gifted and Talented pupils?

Suitability for Gifted and Talented Students:

Able students in years 10 and 11 have great demands on their time from their many GCSE subjects. Critical Thinking is a subject which can be taught in less time than most other subjects. A minimum of 90 minutes each week over a year is suggested, including homework time. This is because Critical Thinking has little factual knowledge – it is a suite of skills.
Gifted students can be entered for the AS level OCR Critical Thinking examination. The nature of the subject specification and the intellectual challenge of an AS level course motivate such students to succeed.
Able students usually wish to attend premier league universities and to enter the professions. Leading universities and medicine, veterinary science and law schools have thousands of applications from students predicted to achieve grade A. They are increasingly turning to their own admission tests to differentiate between the good and the outstanding students. These tests rely heavily on Critical Thinking skills.
Many schools are already teaching AS level Critical Thinking at Key Stage 4 or have a local FE college do it for them. Able students do succeed in spite of taking the course early.
