why teach critical thinking course?

Increase your Year 12 revenue from LSC with reduced costs.
Increase your average AS/A2 points score for "league tables".
Increase students' critical skills in other subjects.
Increase students' chances of entering Oxbridge and medical and legal schools.

Revenue:

The national LSC base rate for funding of AS level Critical Thinking is £755, the same as for other subjects. However, staffing costs can be much lower. This is because the subject can be taught in less time, such as 2 to 3 hours a week, compared to other subjects which often need 4 hours or more each week. This is because Critical Thinking is a suite of skills and has little factual knowledge.

AS/A2 Points Score:

Most year 12 young people study four AS levels. As Critical Thinking can be taught with reduced lesson time, this means many students are able to study five AS level subjects.

Critical Skills in Other Subjects:

Critical Thinking teaches important skills such as:

- the identification of reasons and conclusions
- the identification of assumptions and flaws in arguments
- assessment of the credibility of evidence
- evaluation of the structure, strengths and weaknesses of arguments

These skills are directly relevant to other language-based subjects such as English, History, Geography, and Religious Studies. They help learning and examination assessments.

Oxbridge, Medicine and Law:

Leading universities and medicine, veterinary science and law schools have thousands of applications from students predicted to achieve grade A. They are increasingly turning to their own admission tests to differentiate between the good and the outstanding students. These tests rely heavily on Critical Thinking skills.
